{"id":10009,"date":"2026-03-05T09:19:45","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T09:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/radiobaayiyobakool.com\/?p=10009"},"modified":"2026-03-07T09:21:01","modified_gmt":"2026-03-07T09:21:01","slug":"more-than-200-killed-in-landslide-at-drc-coltan-mine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radiobaayiyobakool.com\/?p=10009","title":{"rendered":"More than 200 killed in landslide at DRC coltan mine."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Thursday 5 March 2026 {CBB}<\/strong>\u00a0A landslide triggered by heavy rains has killed more than 200 people at the Rubaya coltan mine in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>DRC\u2019s Ministry of Mines said on Wednesday that about 70 children were among the victims, and others who were injured were evacuated to medical facilities in the city of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province.<\/p>\n<p>Fanny Kaj, a senior official in the M23 rebel group, which controls the mines, disputed the government figure and said that the collapse was caused by \u201cbombings\u201d and only five people had been killed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can confirm that what people are publishing is not true. There was no landslide; there were bombings, and the death toll isn\u2019t what people are saying. It\u2019s simply about five people who died,\u201d Kaj said.<\/p>\n<p>Ibrahim Taluseke, a miner at the site, said that he had helped to recover more than 200 bodies from the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are afraid, but these are lives that are in danger,\u201d Taluseke told The Associated Press news agency. \u201cThe owners of the pits do not accept that the exact number of deaths be revealed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A senior official from the AFC (Congo River Alliance)\/M23 Rwanda-backed rebel group, which has controlled the mine since 2024, told the Reuters news agency that \u201ccontinued operation had been discouraged\u201d at the site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPending the securing of the area and the implementation of protective measures for miners. The incident is due to the heavy rains of the last few days,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n<p>A similar collapse at the site in late January following heavy rainfall killed more than 200 people.
